Can I apply for a work permit when I enter Canada?
You should apply for your work permit before you travel to Canada. You can only apply at a port of entry if you’re eligible.
New rules about applying for a work permit at a port of entry
As of December 23, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. ET, most foreign nationals in Canada will no longer be able to apply for a work permit at a port of entry. You must apply online for
- your initial work permit
- your work permit extension
If you leave Canada as a worker on maintained status, you’ll lose your ability to work when you return. This means you can’t work until your application is approved.
Read more about the changes, including who can still apply at a port of entry. We’ll provide more updates on this page in the near future.
